General Description

Work for The City of Madison Engineering Department as a Solar Installer Trainee where you will build valuable solar installation and electrical skills! These skills will help you gain a career in a  trade related field. On the job training is provided.

This is trainee level electrical work in the installation of solar electrical systems at City facilities. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician in the Engineering Division. For more information about these exciting positions, please watch this video!

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participants will work on a crew led by a licensed electrician who is also a NABCEP Certified Photovoltaics Installer.
  • Participants will perform Photovoltaics installations at City facilities.
  • Participants will learn safety procedures, system design and layout, component selection and specifications, electrical and mechanical integration processes and troubleshooting techniques related to designing and installing battery based and interconnected systems.
Hours of work are Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Minimum Qualifications

  • All applicants will be considered for these positions.
Familiarity with the following:
  • Basic hand tools.
  • Basic math skills including calculator proficiency and an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percentages. 
  • Internet navigation.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license may be required by the time of interview.
Physical Requirements: 
  • Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and work on roofs on a regular basis.
  • Employees must be able to frequently walk, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, stoop and lift arms overhead to perform work for extended periods of time in variable weather conditions.

*Payroll title is Helper (hourly).
